#65. Ending emails with God shout outs.

Mar 6th by Jon

One time a girl I worked with was selling her house. She got an email from a real estate agent she was thinking about using. The only problem was that he ended his email like this:

thanks for your time
IHG
Matt

She couldn’t figure out what “IHG” meant. She decided the guy must be some sleazy agent that specializes in “ugly houses” and since her house was not in fact ugly she told him to scram. A few days later he wrote her back and apologized for the confusion. IHG meant “in his grip,” a subtle but confusing shout out to God. That’s something we Christians love to do. At the end of our emails we like to give a little “what’s up” to the man upstairs. A guy I love uses “until his nets are full” which is funny to me. I know we’re supposed to be fishers of men but I just get the image of me and my friends at the mall with nets trying to capture people in the food court like the apes caught Charlton Heston in Planet of the Apes.

So tell me, what’s your God shout at that you use at the end of emails?

Personally, I like to sign off with “In His Way”. You can pretty much take it either way. ;-)

there are sooo many great ones…
A friend of mine and I also compiled a similar list… here they are below:
Amazed by Grace
Flummoxed by Faith
Flabbergasted by the Father
Gobstopped by Glory
Agitated by Adoration
Joyfully Jargon-free

Soli Deo Gloria, glory to God alone. Be like Bach and sign your emails with “SDG”. You know you want to!

Mandi Mar 28, 2008

I just do the following:

Mandi \O/

One of my favorites –

“For the untold millions who are yet untold”

Timbo Mar 29, 2008

I generally sign my letters thus:

In Christs holy, redeeming, beautiful name, that makes me tremble in worshipful prayer thrice daily, I pray that thee receive mine letter with a heart full of gladness and the holy spirit.

Timbo.

I thought IHG meant In his grace.
In his grip sounds like some type of wrestling reference.

In His Way is most often used in irony. I have a friend that uses it for everything, including his death match characters in M rated video games.

Its like running around and saying “With the love of God I blow your guts all over the screen”

Doug Apr 1, 2008

Love the list, I find myself amused and saddened to read it many times. I usually just end with “shalom alechem” *shrug*

Alice Apr 1, 2008

I’ve actually seen “F.A.T. for Jesus–Faithful, Available, Teachable”

Zach King Apr 1, 2008

love it…we make fun of these too. My personal favorites are “in the hands of the One who holds the whole world in His hands” or “Jamming the Lamb” or “rockin the flock”

iwritetheblogs Apr 4, 2008

I used to do “God Bless You,” which got truncated to “God Bless,” which nowadays is used by everyone around here (in California) as GB. When I got to seminary, I quickly learned the industry standard is “Blessings.” Many of my non-seminary friends rebel and just say “Cheers.”

komplex Apr 5, 2008

i do this “When you die, will you go to heaven? Yes – No – Maybe” the text links to this site: http://www.allaboutgod.com/common/when-you-die-will-you-go-to-heaven.htm

Anonymous Apr 13, 2008

always say exactly what you mean but be sure to end with a :o )
and after you say exactly what you mean sign off with
Blessings,
CJ

For example:
You suck.
Blessings,
CJ

I used to get emails from a group of Moms that would say after each sentince praisen Jesus for ______. Now I do live in Texas.

Marni Apr 17, 2008

For His Fame Alone

Got that one from our former youth pastor. I can’t personally use it because I don’t have a seminary degree and it seems like you should have a Masters of Theology before you’re qualified…

relupin Apr 18, 2008

My mother does this:

<><

For every. single. e-mail.

megs May 5, 2008

i got a “under his warm blanket” once.

and then i proceeded to vommit.

katdish May 21, 2008

Love and peace,
Grace and peace,
Because of Calvary,
In Him,
For Him,
By Him,
Because of Him,
(pretty much any preposition followed by “Him”)

Here’s how I like to end an email:

with my name (werid, I know)

Now, don’t go check your e-mails to see if I used one of those other ones, because sometimes I backslide.

jason gabriel leonard May 30, 2008

I’m bookmarking this page for the comments. Especially Robyn Collins’ list. Wow, that’s amazing.

Someone sent me an email with
GIGATT
above their name.
It took me a while to figure out (or at least I think) the acronym stood for God Is Good A The Time.
My department thought up our own acronyms using these letter for a week and put them on our emails to each other. It became a big game of one-upping each other.

I am a travel agent to the missionaries (for lack of a better job description), so I get emails from preachers and missions directors all the time. my favorite is an email signed off with “investing in eternity” when the request was for a free upgrade or a plea for an exit row seat since God made them too tall for regular coach. this post resonates with me! :)

Daniel Jul 2, 2008

Sometimes I use God’s Warrior, but most of the time, I just end it with my name.

Brad Jul 11, 2008

I used to put a little Jesus Fish using the ‘greater than’ and ‘less than’ signs. It looked like this: <><

Then as I studied theology more I signed my e-mails with “Soli Deo Gloria.”

Now I don’t put any bells or whistles on them.

Abby Aug 1, 2008

I just usually put my name and my favorite bible verse, Joshua 1:9.

This blog is hilarious, and I hope you keep it up!

Lauren Aug 15, 2008

I thought it was going to stand for “I hug God”. That would have been great.
Have you talked about life verses yet?

Tonya Aug 30, 2008

These are great!

All of my e-mail have a line of fish and my contact info. Thus :

><> ><> ><> ><> ><> ><>

My Name
phone#
e-mail addy
etc.

jazz_machine Jun 4, 2009

I'm hardly subtle. Mine all have:
I will keep faith until the sky falls upon me and crushes me,
until the earth opens up and swallows me,
until the seas arise and overwhelm me,

as my signature.

bug Jun 9, 2009

This is a really old post I know but none the less…

You know how you can customize your "signature" at the end of your email, mine is some verse in Exodus.

mim Jun 20, 2009

Closings are awkward. They're awkward both in e-mail and in letters. In e-mail, I usually use just my name, my name and locality, or my initials if it's a follow-up.

But Christians writing to Christians have ways to deal with the awkwardness. For me, "In Christ" or "Blessings" does fine, or if I'm feeling wordy, "In His love."

Some high-church clergy I've known go Latin: "Pax et gaudium" or "Dominus tecum." They add a +, but I always forget if it's before for a priest and after for a bishop, or the other way around.

adrialien Jun 29, 2009

usually just:

God bless
in Him
in Christ
because He lives
or
in His arbor

followed by my name

Juan Carlos Alicea Jul 10, 2009

As a teacher at a Christian school, I close e-mails and memos for my job with "In His Service." If you don't like what I'm saying or doing, you're criticizing my service to the Lord!

For personal e-mails I usually just use my name, but maybe I'll pick up Joel Brown's signature.

alicia Sep 5, 2009

katdish! how hilarious are you!!! i was literally laughing out loud reading this blog.. good stuff..

Kelly Sep 19, 2009

I mostly say…
Forever His
because I am!

Libby Sep 21, 2009

Sometimes I use "For His Fame". I have friends who use "For Jesus' Fame". I like that they just come right out with who "He" is :)

katers Nov 5, 2009

grace and peace, just like Paul. ; )

Jane Dec 2, 2009

oh wow.
My email address was something along the lines of 4evrsteadfast4god@——.com and my signature was Latin for "the Lord is my light" ….

Auberon Draenen Wen Dec 16, 2009

When I was catholic I'd put JMJ at the top centered with little html crosses or the + sign. An in them with In Jesus and Mary.

It doesn't bother me much when a Christian does this part of the culture ya know?

oh and when HTML let's me as a Druid I do /| html locvs eating the reversed "/" so I will do |0| more often.

The first is the Druid symbol f Awen the second is a form of the Druid's Sigil. I also now put the acronym of my Druid order under my name "ADF"

/|
Auberon

Auberon Draenen Wen Dec 16, 2009

See even this site eats the reversed / symbol. Discrimination I tells ya!

@5tacymar7in Jan 16, 2010

I change between Bible verses that really hit me. Like right now I have Jeremiah 1:5: "Before I shaped you in the womb, I knew all about you. Before you saw the light of day, I had holy plans for you"
It's personal to me, but can also minister to others who receive e.mails from me.

Susan in Elk Grove Feb 9, 2010

I do some emailing for our church each week, and I sign off with:
In His service,
~Susan

stacikristine Feb 12, 2010

I thought IHG was going to be "I Heart God". :) My FIL says "God Bless!" every time he finishes talking to you, emailing you, or anything! I've just come to expect it…

Alisha Feb 25, 2010

I use this:

Jesus Christ
The Original Tomb Raider

But recently i've got ride of it, coz sometimes i keep it and sometimes i delete it……just easier having nothing!
