#103. Singing "Our God is an Awesome God."

Apr 1st by Jon

I can say without any degree of exaggeration, that I have personally sung this song 19 million times. Seriously, during the 90s, churches across the country wore this song out. I think one of the things we liked about it is that it’s got a chorus you can just sing for hours. Here it is:

Our God is an awesome God,
He reigns from Heaven above,
With wisdom, pow’r and love,
Our God is an awesome God.

Music ministers would just stretch that chorus out for an eternity, teasing us with that pause that we all thought meant the song was over but then launching into another repeat of those words. They also liked that the verses allowed them to do some cheesy hand motions and facial expressions. For instance “when He rolls up His sleeves He ain’t just puttin’ on the Ritz.” If your worship leader didn’t pretend to roll up his/her sleeves during that line then consider yourself lucky.

My question now though is what is the new “Our God is an Awesome God?” What song is your church or youth group wearing out? I submit it’s either, “Blessed be your name” or “How great is our God” by Tomlin. Post a comment and let us know what you think.

What about “This Is the Air I Breathe?” My church always left the “e” off the end so I would sing (because I’m passive aggressive) “This Is the Air I Breath.”

We have moved to a different city and our church now is very behind the times when it comes to music. A few weeks ago our worship leader said, “I’m going to introduce a new song this week. Just try to catch on.” It was… How Great Is Our God.

Have you talked about how we like to call the song “Step by Step” when it is really titled “sometimes by step”. Drives me nuts!

I don’t listen to the radio so I don’t dislike Third Day. I stopped listening when my local radio station changed to Klove.

It is nice to know that people shutter at some songs too. To sing the same chorus for 20mins gets real old real fast

What also gets me is people don’t think about what they are singing. take the song that has the line, “I will dance like David danced.” I often turn to my friend and ask them if they are going to dance like David. After reminding them how David danced I always get no as a response. Do you realize what you are saying? Or is everything that comes with a Christian label blindly accepted?

Laura –

Thank you for mentioning "Breathe" — what a melodically BORING song!… Once in worship my husband leaned over to me during the "And Iiiiiiiiiiiiiii, I'm desperate for you" part and wondered how many people have committed suicide during the singing of this depressing song…

I feel very lucky — We only sing "Awesome God" and "Pharoah Pharoah" at camp, so look forward to them as a once a year thing, and therefore still enjoy them. And our praise band has a repetoire of something like 200 songs, so sometimes I feel as if we *don't* repeat songs enough. (Just the other day, I found myself wishing we'd sing "Shout to the Lord…")

As for "Heart of Worship," which someone described as a 'strange' song — there's actually an interesting story behind it — check it out here: http://www.crosswalk.com/1253122/

Love the site!

There are SO MANY just off the top of my head…Lord We Lift Your Name on High, Shout to the Lord, Open the Eyes of my Heart. I just don't understand why we only sing songs from the 90's in church, let alone on Christian music stations. If I hear "I Can Only Imagine" or "Testify to Love" one more time I think my ears might fall off.

Ahhhh…I really love this post. I have so many memories from just this one song.

a. Blessed Be Your name…for sure. I mean, I havent been to church in a year, but…when I went, it was thing song being over done for sure.

b. At local hardcore shows in high school we'd end the night by screaming this chorus together a few times (picture a stage being swarmed with sweaty, dirty kids yelling the words at the top of their lungs)…But then singing it at church on Sunday staring at the guy singing this very same song with a neatly trimmed beard and deer eyes just wasn't the same.

c. At my moms old church when they'd sing this every week, the choir leader, which was a black guy that got real sweaty, would tell this one super tall white home-schooled kid to come up EVERY time and sing–or rather, "rap"–all the other lines in between the chorus…it was awful.

I guess it could be argued that 'The Old Rugged Cross' is blasphemous too, since the lyrics say "I'll cherish the Old Rugged Cross" when we should revere the One who died on that cross, but then again, I nitpick, haha. Also I'm guilty of capitalizing One & I must confess I use the capital H in Him. *runs & hides*

I attended a church for a while that sang "Give Thanks" for every offertory time, they'd just sing and sing and sing and repeat and sing some more, every week.

One church that I went to played "Let God Arise" by Chris Tomlin every single Wednesday night for about 4 months….no joke.

I go to a VERY small church and we just sing along to CD's for worship time. The person who picks out the music LOVES Jonathan Stockstill's CD(s). We CONSTANTLY have to sing his songs and I didn't really like him all that much from the beginning…bleh!

Mighty to Save. I liked it until I was forced to sing it 80 million times, especially when the chapel committee was looking for a way to make a chapel really "memorable."

Ours used to be "I Could Sing of Your Love Forever"… or as we liked to call it, "I've been Singing this song forever"!

A few weeks ago my church musicains brought back shine jesus shine. I thought that had been worn out by sometime in the 90's

Open the eyes of my heart, Lord.
Open the eyes of my heart.
I want to see you.
I want to see you.

To see you high and lifted up,
shining in the light of your glory!
Pour out your pour and love,
as we sing Holy, Holy, Holy.

repeat (with variations)

I just typed all of this from the top of my head. Got it memorized lol.

We sing "Grace Like Rain" a lot but I don't think that song can ever be worn out; it's so powerful and profound.
My worship leader has written a lot of songs that we sing OVER and OVER. Seriously. All the time.
And we sing a lot of 70s, 80s and 90s songs … which leads me to be reminded that we ARE in the 21st century now …

here's a thing – there are people (like me) who are in no way attracted to singing ANY songs. None. Worship isn't just singing, as I'm sure most of you know. Yet churches only equate public worship with singing.
We're not ALL into singing. My giftings, along with my thought processes are visual. I design and take photographs for fun and money. I feel worship building towards our creator God when I SEE his work. Singing leaves me bored, and over-sung songs leave me turned off. I wait with growing impatience for the boring stuff to finish so the main message can be delivered, making me think about my walk with God.
Yet I've been in churches where I seem to be the only one not being swallowed up in endless chorus epics.

"Shine Jesus Shine" and "Majesty". Those two will not be in heaven, I'll wager.

Ugh, I am already sick of Hillsong.
