#124. The kid that makes out with girls from other youth groups.

Apr 8th by Jon

You had this kid in your youth group, I know you did. If I asked you his name you could post it in a comment in about 3.7 seconds. His name was always Trey or Marc with a “c”. And he had nice hair, more confidence than a kid his age should have and usually had an older sibling that taught him all about the cool music that kids in higher grades were listening to. He sometimes owned an acoustic guitar and had a wallet on a chain. Worse of all, as soon as your youth group ever went to some sort of camp or ski retreat with other youth groups, he immediately wooed all the new pretty girls. It was like he had some sort of cool kid power. You were still unpacking your clothes for camp and he was throwing Frisbee with someone pretty not from your youth group outside. I was not this kid. It was not for lack of trying. I wanted to be this kid. Promise. But I was the pastor’s kid and that’s a different kind of kid altogether.

ours was curtis… and it happened everytime. i think the boys in our youth group called it “Sharkin” for women…

Hairline Fracture Apr 8, 2008

I was the pastor’s daughter, and the cool guys never dated me because they were scared of my dad.

At least that’s what I told myself at the time.

Rae Apr 8, 2008

Do Christians actually *like* this kid, though?

Pascals Bookie Apr 8, 2008

I was this kid in my youth group. It was far more the older-sibling influence than anything else, I’m pretty sure.

I’m very, very sorry.

Wyman Apr 8, 2008

This kid was my best friend growing up, he ending up making out with every girl I ever had a crush on.

I see him now maybe once or twice a year, but people still inexplicably call me to talk to me about his excellent hair.

OMG.
1. The afore-blogged lock-ins? We mostly all of us played spin-the-bottle. With the visiting youth groups (holy crap – WHERE were our chaperones??)
2. We did have one guy in particular who would serenade “the ladies” at camp(s). I believe the song of choice was “stand by me.” and oh, was he good! hahahhaha….

(Yeah – I think that in the five years I was in youth group – we had something like…6 youth ministers. That could have something to do with, say, point number one. Almost all of them had facial hair, by-the-by…)

rae -
I would argue yes, because someone liked him enough to constantly make out with him. A lot of someones, which is why he made the list.

Trina Apr 8, 2008

We actually had two and they were best friends. Taylor and Andrew. Although Taylor was the worst of the two and no I never made out with him, but some of my friends did.

komplex Apr 8, 2008

lol @ Pascalie who claims “I’m very, very sorry.”

ADBulldawgs Apr 9, 2008

Yeah, I think I married one. 1st kiss at an intersection on the way home from his church. We never went to mine… His name is, of course, Trey.

Scott Apr 9, 2008

You’d be surprised how many times “that kid” grew up to be a pastor.

I know I did…

The Gang's All Here! Apr 9, 2008

ooooh, do i hear a post about pastor’s kids coming along? where would you start? there’s so much to say, so many stereotypes to bust (or affirm?)!

and in my church, there were no cool guys. just my sisters and me and a couple really lost souls. sad and geeky lost souls. small church. really small church!

LOL at scott’s post – “that kid” grew up to be a pastor. (snicker, guffaw!)

datrevor Apr 10, 2008

we would sing ‘good night sweetheart’ at retreat curfew to get the girls attention and work from there. oh the scars we all carry in the name of christian fellowship.

Dollymama Apr 11, 2008

We just had kids that made out with each other within our youth group. I never missed a Friday night meeting!!

Why we loved district retreats 101: Because we got to meet cute boys from the other churches

Grace Apr 13, 2008

Our kid was a guy named Scott who ultimately played football at USC which was amazing as we lived in the Midwest. Everyone plays for OU there…

Anonymous Apr 22, 2008

Yeah… that kid groped me. He was a perv.

Christi Apr 24, 2008

Nick. His name was Nick. My youth group went to camp every summer and there was another group that was always there with us and I can tell you the guy from that group too. His name was Luke. I’m not exaggerating when I say that EVERY girl in my youth group and Luke’s youth group was in love with him. Luke is getting married to my best friend in August. Tracie met Luke and 8 months later she had a ring. Oi.

rubyslipperlady Apr 25, 2008

We had a girl, not a guy. She was my BFF – oh, the days.

Molly D Apr 29, 2008

Oh…I think I was that guy…only I’m a girl. And not because I was very cool or cute. Probably just because I was willing to kiss on the first date…actually on the first meeting.
BUT, I was a “good girl” and only kissed…
That’s probably a whole other entry to this list: “Good girls who only kiss…everyone.” Ugh. Sorry.

Scotty and Lisa May 3, 2008

I managed to date this guy beginning right before the youth mission camp (where he would usually pick up other pretty girls)…but he eventually broke up with me our senior year because “we just don’t know who else might be out there that we’ll meet at college”. Grrrr.

Haze May 3, 2008

…oh. my. goodness.

The kid in my youth group WAS named Marc.

With a C.

Rangershnoah May 13, 2008

We had an overabundance in my yg, including Trey’s older brothers. yes, 3 of them, all from one family. My older and younger sisters both fell for the glamour while I rolled my eyes.. and went for Trey’s best friend.

Daniel Jul 11, 2008

Grace-
As an alum of the University of Oklahoma, I must say something: Boomer Sooner!

Now that I got that out of my system, that is impressive that Scott went to USC. They have a great program that has risen from the dead thanks to Pete Carroll’s recruiting and coaching. And because this isn’t a blog about college football, I’ll stop there. :)

Kitty Jul 16, 2008

I think all the goody-goodys migrated to my church (not that that’s a bad thing). Here people don’t date, they “Court,” and if two people are “courting,” they’ll probably be engaged sometime in the next few months. You never EVER see a guy and girl under 18 talking to eachother unless they’re in a group of kids all talking. It would probably shock my socks off if anyone every made out at our youth retreats. Either we’re really weird or I’m woefully ignorant.

Anonymous Jul 29, 2008

Haha. Ours was a guy named Dane. He’s out fo youth now, still trying to woo the young teenage girls.

Kimi Oct 10, 2008

Ours was Derek and he was one of the pastors kids, I even dated him. It was crazy, he was always with a different girl.

Anonymous Nov 12, 2008

Around my parts, his name was either Nathan or Nate. Seriously, every guy I met in a youth group with either name was ‘that guy’. And we Nathans hated the Nates, but somehow got along with each other. The Nates were creeps who took advantage of any girl they could, we Nathans were sophisticated, romancing every girl we could. Looking back, I see there was no difference, but I still get along great with every Nathan and no Nate I meet.

Coincidentally, every Nathan I know now is a past player who married a pure-as-the-driven-snow girl. Makes no sense.

Anonymous Dec 5, 2008

Lol…there was a guy like that at church camp once. A couple of us guys spread the rumor that he had a combination of mono and herpes…..

Kidsis Mar 26, 2009

Ours was Matt, but he was the older brother. His sister also was a bit of a bad girl since ended up getting pregnant when she was 19 and unmarried (and then later married the former Jr High leaders’ son. They used to talk about me while I was sitting in front of them in the van).

I heard rumors about him and some girl going out into the woods at camp one year.

Michael Dec 12, 2009

*ahem* I was not witness to this, but spoke with several eyewitnesses. But our kid that was like this was about 14 ish and brought a gun to church. He tried to shoot it during opening songs and… well, he forgot (I guess?) to put bullets in it. *shrugs* Apparently he did it on a dare from one of the girls (I think).
