#128. Throwing stuff away out of guilt. Buying it again later.
Apr 8th by Jon
I have owned three different copies of the movie “Fight Club.” The reason I have owned this movie multiple times is that sometimes I feel convicted about it and become convinced that God does not want me to own it. It’s got some nudity, is ultra violent and has a pretty dark message. So after a particularly convicting retreat I usually throw it away. About a month later though, I remember how much I like it. It’s got a great message about how consumer focused our culture has become. It’s got some good quotes:
Lonesome Crick
Seriously? An Orc? This is the wrong story for you my friend. You’re going to hate this one because I promise, there are zero Orcs and no one has a sword. Well, one of the bad guys has a really long knife but it certainly hasn’t be made by Elfin Lords in days of yore.

When I became a believer someone convinced me that my huge collection of Vinyl records was devil music. Even though I believe God spoke to me through some of those secular lyrics. I kick myself today now that i know better! 2,500 Lps! I want my records back! Now I’m beginning a modest collection, examiming my motives and enjoying the music again.
Here are the lyrics to ‘After Forever’ Master of Reality LP by Black Sabbath~
Have you ever thought about your soul – can it be saved?
Or perhaps you think that when you’re dead you just stay in your grave
Is God just a thought within your head or is he a part of you?
Is Christ just a name that you read in a book when you were in school?
When you think about death do you lose your breath or
do you keep your cool?
Would you like to see the Pope on the end of a rope
do you think he’s a fool?
Well I have seen the truth, yes I’ve seen the light and I’ve changed my ways
And I’ll be prepared when you’re lonely and scared at the end of our days
Could it be you’re afraid of what your friends might say
If they knew you believe in God above?
They should realize before they criticize
that God is the only way to love
Is your mind so small that you have to fall
In with the pack wherever they run
Will you still sneer when death is near
And say they may as well worship the sun?
I think it was true it was people like you that crucified Christ
I think it is sad the opinion you had was the only one voiced
Will you be so sure when your day is near, say you don’t believe?
You had the chance but you turned it down, now you can’t retrieve
Perhaps you’ll think before you say that God is dead and gone
Open your eyes, just realize that he’s the one
The only one who can save you now from all this sin and hate
Or will you still jeer at all you hear? Yes! I think it’s too late.
A kid I had a crush on in high school did this all the time….with cds…with anything I think. He felt extra convicted sometimes because he was also our youth worship leader. So it was like Pedro the Lion was ok, then he wasnt, then that "Control" album just drew the line. Hahaa
I always told myself I would throw out my "Secular" cds but…never did. Cds were expensive back then. C'mon $22? I'm not throwing that away.
Oh WOW! I sooo did this, but with music.
I'm still relieved I didn't get to the ones that, fortunately, happened to be in my sister's or brother's collection from a previous borrow. They're safe. And I feel guilty for feeling that way, lol but… *shrug*
oh and Hi! New visitor who will continue to visit.
I stopped being friends with two of my dearest, closest friends in the early 1990's because I thought God didn't want me to be friends with (gasp!) gay people.
To me, that's way worse than throwing away a movie, although I've done that. (or bought the "clean" version of a CD, only to abandon it when I realized that my mind was filling in the blanks anyway . . . )
Fight Club is one of the movies I watch when I feel like I need to get back to God, actually. It reminds me that the life that God wants for me isn't just going to work in my cube, earning enough to buy nice things, and doing it all again the next day. I don't have a problem with the violence because, frankly, the Bible is ultra violent. As for the boobies, I do agree that we should be careful about movies which might make us sin in our hearts or lust after someone. However, as a heterosexual female, Helena Bonham Carter's breasts don't do anything for me, so I feel on pretty safe ground with this one. I would never encourage a male friend who I knew struggled with lust or porn to watch a movie with nudity in it though, even if I felt it really spoke to me.
Guilty!
That is one fantastic movie. If it does not cause you specifically to sin then I feel it's okay for you to keep it and enjoy it. If you feel others might have sinful thoughts or what have you about it then just don't loan it out
