#168. Printing bulletins on pen repelling paper.
Apr 21st by JonThis will hit home with approximately 14 people, but I still have to say it. I want to take sermon notes. I do. You’ve left me some space or maybe even created a little fill in the word scenario. “Jesus _____ the little children.” I brought a pen, a uniball micro, and I’m excited to scribble down some words of wisdom. But as soon as I do, I realize that you’ve printed the bulletin on glossy paper, the equivalent of trying to write on ice. No sooner have I written down one of your points then I look down and find the entire thing has smudged off on my hand. Fantastic. Now it looks like the side of my hand, the part I would use to break bricks with if I knew karate, says “Jesus loaves the little children.” That doesn’t even make sense but through the smeared mess it’s hard to make out the word “loves.”
Matte, that’s the way to go. Let’s all embrace Matte paper. It practically drinks ink.

I am one of the 14! I have now started carrying a ballpoint pen specifically for this purpose (and ONLY for this purpose).
Uniball Micro vs shiny bulletin notes.
Uniball Micro wins. Thus, I have stacks of composition books.
Um, I take notes in my Bible. Which is probably another topic altogether, since Christians love showing off their battered Bibles (unless they’re in those handy fanny packs).
LOL, great point. I bet the matte paper is more environmentally conscious too.
amen and amen
Let’s organize a boycott opposing glossy paper.
In total agreement with you. Thanks for putting it out there.
Whenever I go to a church with shiny bulletins I immediately think, they don’t want me to take notes … and their bulletin budget is higher than my church’s.
I thought I was the only one who gets annoyed by this. Thanks for making me feel better.
A variation is the schizo paper I had yesterday at church. Even using a regular ball point pen was no match for this glossy goodness. The white portion of the paper wasn’t so particular, but the red…the red had quite an attitude. Despite my furious scribbling, he would have none of it.
But the paper is shiny!
Reminds me of the time I was at a church mission and they had been unbelievably cheap with the paper they had chosen to print their tracts.
It was deep orange, with black ink, and while the ink held out, the orange dye of the paper leaked right through the pocket of the light coloured jacket I was wearing and ruined it.
YES! devout hypocrite. christians do love to show off their battered bibles in a subtle way. bonus points for name engraved in shiny stuff and the pages with shiny stuff on the side. they like to stick things in there too, like a bulletins and notes. and highlight and underline stuff. whoo im on a roll
*cough* 7:22 bulletins *cough*
You would be happy to know that at my church, where I am the esteemed secretary, we have always used matte paper – even on the cover! *preens* LOL.
I absolutely agree! That is so true, and I think it every single Sunday.
I also always wonder why churches blow so much money on nice, color pamphlets when they could use that glossy paper money to, oh, I don’t know… Feed people.
This is a great blog, and I’m going to link to it from mine! It’s http://sweetpotatoepunk.blogspot.com
Thanks,

Hey there, I actually oversee the printing of bulletin at your church. I’ll keep that in mind. I’m not one to take notes on the bulletin…. I keep a journal… generally we choose the paper based on the series we’re doing. Some work better with coated paper… otherwise the look is ruined. But I try to use uncoated whenever possible, I think it looks better in most cases.
You know since you go to my church, your website is a really cool comment jar…
Dear North Point Bulletin Printer-
I think you do a great job. And fine your work to be fantastic regardless of it’s possible aversion to the ink I so desperately want to add to it. I expect to see your A game next week at the Drive conference.
Jon
This is especially a problem in our church because we use a wax-based ink. It looks really nice, but it scratches off the paper! Can make a really big mess – I quit taking notes on the bulletin just before we decided to stop printing them altogether – saved the church something like $7000 annually!
I should give this URL to the church leader who made me start using the Color Laser Gloss. Sure, it folds beautifully like no other paper I’ve ever used, but it does come out of the printer at approx. 250 degrees.
Maybe we’ll even leave room for notes at some point!
My church has used the same, regular printing paper for the last 15 years at least. I run into the glossy paper when I'm on vacation and I go to a super church with my relatives or friends. I remember once getting a bulletin that felt like it was straight up photo paper. The ink didn't stay there, but you could see where I tried to write because it was scratched into the paper.
I have experienced this many times. Now, I take notes exclusively on my iphone.
I too take the notes on the iThing. (I just have the iPod, no fees for poor … Me’s?!?)
Yes! Thank you. I hate it when the bulletin is all shiny and full of hip activities and I can't take notes. I want to take notes. I need to take notes. I feel like I'm not paying attention if I'm not taking notes. It's possible that this is a result of my dad grading my sermon notes starting in the 3rd grade to "help prepare for college", but I don't think so.
I completely agree! Or someone comes up to you and wants to talk to you later about something their going through so you want to write down their number or the time you'll be meeting them for coffee, but you can't. You might as well write it on your hand.
The gloss has got to go.
I visited the church of a guy I was dating. I am used to my church having the order of the worship service being printed up so I knew what was going on and how I was expected to participate, the 3 scripture passages we were reading, weekly announcements and prayer requests, and basic info about who was leading our worship and communion policies. My church uses basic, matte photocopy paper.
The church I was visiting used the glossy stuff, and it looked more like a brochure for a tourist attraction, and didn't do much to get me through the service. I was not able to tell the difference between the two services, and I could only really tell you just a few of the people we were praying for. Everything else had stock photos and info about things I couldn't participate in since I was a non member. And it also had info that I would think belongs in the monthly church newsletter. Okay……
