Short Saturdays – What are you reading?

Oct 4th by Jon

Right now I am reading:

1.Crazy Love: Overwhelmed by a Relentless God” by Francis Chan with Danae Yankoski

2.Samson and the Pirate Monks: Calling Men to Authentic Brotherhood” by Nate Larkin

3.Rapture Ready!: Adventures in the Parallel Universe of Christian Pop Culture” by Daniel Radosh

I like each of them for very different reasons and they’re challenging what I believe about faith, God, and what it means to be a Christian in today’s culture.

How about you? What are you reading?

I work at a Christian bookstore so I’ve stickered, sold, and/or bought a good 95% of these titles.

Personally I’ve been reading
Falling Up by Melody Carlson
Where Have All the Good Men Gone by A.J. Kiesling
Boy Meets Girl by Shannon and Joshua Harris
The Caase for Christ by Lee Strobel

Not to mention all the books I’ve picked up at work but not had a chance to read yet between university and work.

Culture Making by Andy Crouch
Truly great perspective on Christians using culture(s) to further horizons of impact.
Excellent writer laying down
some excellent ideas.

Grace (Eventually) by Anne Lamott. The last of the essay books that started with Traveling Mercies… I just love her. She has a rare and beautiful writing gift.

And alongside that I’m reading Howl’s Moving Castle by Diana Wynne Jones, because I’ve been craving some lighthearted kids’ fantasy. Fun story.

April Oct 6, 2008

Right now I’m reading:

-Home by Marilynne Robinson
-The Four Loves by C.S. Lewis
-The Picture of Dorian Gray by Oscar Wilde (for school)

I read Crazy Love a couple of months ago and it was exactly what I needed to read at that time in my my relationship with God. It impacted me so much that I immediately went out and bought extra copies to lend to friends because I wanted to talk about it with someone but didn’t want to part with my copy.

Aristox Oct 6, 2008

Im currently tackling
(#)C.S. Lewis – Mere Christianity
(#)Shaine Claiborne – Irresistible Revolution
(#)Chip Ingram – The Invisible War
Also moving through some of the main parts of the OT

Surprised By Hope – N.T. Wright (for the second time in the hopes I take more on board!)

It’s a great book about hope the Christian hope in the ressurection ties in with our hope for the world we live in.

Well worth a read….

Crazy Love by Francis Chan
Youth Culture 101 by Walt Mueller

To do reading list:
Pagan Christianity by Frank Viola and George Barna
Essential Church? by Thom S. Rainer
The Barbarian Way by Erwin Raphael McManus

Ron Davis Oct 6, 2008

I just finished Ron Paul’s “The Revolution: A Manifesto”

Just started “For Young Men Only” by Feldhahn and Rice for a blog review later this week. Nothing like waiting until the last minute…

Next in the queue is “The Encore Effect” by Mark Sanborn, followed by “Churched” by Matthew Paul Turner (which I am REALLY looking forward to).

Tim Oct 6, 2008

Bag of Bones by Stephen King (hey, I read novels. Sue me!)
God Save the Eggs by Woody and Susan Roland. Go to Amazon right now and buy this one. I’ll wait…

Got it? Good. It’s an excellent series of amusing stories with good messages sort of like, well, SCL. Woody and Su are good friends of mine and missionaries in Costa Rica.

Buy it. Make them Christian Thousandaires. You won’t be disappointed.

Marni Oct 6, 2008

The Notebook by Nicholas Sparks, Tender is the Night by F. Scott Fitzgerald and No Other Gods by Kelly Minter.

I try to have a few books going at once…one that will challenge my relationship with God so I do better and one that lets me read for kicks and grins so my brain can rest a little ;)

Kelly Minter is kicking my spiritual butt I gotta say…

Greg Bolt Oct 6, 2008

I don’t think I am a heretic, but…

I work with youth so right now I am literally in the middle of the Stephanie Meyer’s books. I’ve read “Twilight” and “New Moon”, I also am about to go the bookstore and get “Eclipse”.(PS I love them and I think I am going to have a youth book club to talk about them)

Also, I am reading “Christianity for the Rest of Us” by Diana Butler Bass. I think it is really good so far.

I also have “A Thousand Splendid Suns” on my list of to reads…along with about a billion others.

Stacey Oct 6, 2008

Oh, I love books! I'm eager to check out some that were mentioned here.
Greg, I just finished the Twilight series a few weeks back. Eclipse was my favorite! I didn't like the last one as much, though.
Nick & Sam, I'm waiting on my brother's copy of Brisinger. Glad I'm not the only one here who reads those!
Right now I'm reading Finding God's Path Through Your Trials by Elizabeth George and The Scarlet Letter by Nathaniel Hawthorne. Odd combination, I guess. Or maybe not.

Beth B Oct 6, 2008

For fiction time: “The Forgetting Room” by Nick Bantock, “Lost In A Good Book” by Jasper Fforde.

For inspiration: I Corinthians (staff development).

Melina Hunt Oct 6, 2008

@greg bolt yeah i work with high schoolers so they got me into them too! i was so prepared to hate them, and after reading twilight, i went out and bought new moon and eclipse and pre-ordered a copy of breaking dawn to be picked up the night it came out…hah. when the other leaders at the youth group found out i was reading them, i think they got together and prayed for me..

katharhino Oct 6, 2008

I’m reading Pilgrim’s Progress by John Bunyan. I can only read a few pages at a time because there’s too much to digest.

Also Anna Karenina, Book of a Thousand Days by Shannon Hale (YA fantasy) and These Three Remain by Pamela Aidan (published Jane Austen fanfiction). But I had to mention Pilgrim’s Progress first because it’s way more impressive than Jane Austen fanfiction.

I love fiction and almost never read Christian nonfic. My book review blog is here for any fellow booklovers/Janeites/fiction-readers who might be interested: http://canislibris.livejournal.com

eireann Oct 7, 2008

Blue Like Jazz: Non-Religious Thoughts on Christian Spirituality by Donald Miller, and it is so humbling, convicting, and challenging.

Also, The Hotel New Hampshire by John Irving, because I love the way he writes. And I’m dying to read Three Cups of Tea.

Gabrielle Eden Oct 7, 2008

Your blog and other blogs,

Our Eyes Fixed On Jesus, by Guy Chevreau, a book about spiritual warfare being about looking at Jesus instead of engaging in a fight with Satan……..

A Love Worth Giving by Max Lucado…about how we cannot love until we receive love from God…..

The Spiritual Battle For Cuba, a book written by Tom White, the head of Voice of the Martyrs, written back in the early 80’s about Cuba, where he was martyred….

The Children’s Bread, a book on healing by Elaine Bonn, who believes that Jesus absolutely wants us to be healed and made whole….

Ann Marie & Scott Oct 7, 2008

Hooray for books!
1. Scarlet by Stephen Lawhead
2nd book in his re-telling of the Robin Hood myths set in medeival Wales. Sometimes too word-y but pretty good. This one’s about Will Scarlet.
2. God is the Gospel by Piper
love it…but can only chew on small pieces at a time
3. United Symbolism of America by Robert Heironomus
For my Anthro class at college. A crack-shot conspiritorialist that I have a do a 6 page paper on.
4. Christ the Lord by Anne Rice
Just finished both books in her series on Jesus’ fictionalized life. I loved them! I would like to hear others’ opinions on her writings. Obviously no t gospel, but very very interesting. And great writing of course!

Boundaries With Kids by Dr. Henry Cloud & Dr. John Townsend. I have a two-year-old and I think it goes without saying that we're experiencing some "issues". I don't have the energy to read anything else.

TxChristianGrl Oct 9, 2008

I am reading:

Crazy Love (Francis Chan) – are you also following the video clips on the crazy love site? The church he pastors is about half hour from me, I am going to visit soon.

To Live Is Christ – Beth Moore – Its about the Life of Paul….

The “Circle Trilogy” by Ted Dekker. Just finished book 2 (RED). You won’t find a better allegory representing the fall (Book 1: BLACK – evil enters the earth)and redemption (Book: 2 RED – the spilled blood of the saviour). Can’t wait to read about the earth restored (Book 3: WHITE).
