The idea that all Christians like a certain author, speaker, musician, or ascribe to the same theology or political views.

Especially being at Christian college. Rob Bell and Francis Chan are the big thing right now, as are the Passion conference folks and a number of Christian-rock and worship bands. And being a political conservative.

Well, I don't *dislike* most of the above...But I'm an Episcopalian in a Baptist world. I like liturgy and hymns more than the Passion Conference Worship Experience. I'd rather read CS Lewis, Chesterton, or Brennan Manning than Rob Bell or Louie Giglio. I prefer Rich Mullins and Jennifer Knapp to the David Crowder Band.

And then there's the social expectations. Yes, I'm female. Yes, I'm 26. No, I'm not engaged, nor do I intend to marry someone I meet here (the Boy is elsewhere, establishing himself in his job) or have as many babies as my body could possibly produce. No, I don't want to work with Children's Church or the nursery. No, I'm not a conservative (I'm one of the few moderate-liberals on campus, and one of even *fewer* who are women and white). No, I don't want to sit through yet another Bible study or lecture about modesty -- I do dress modestly to begin with, and brothers need to take *some* responsibility for how they react to a woman's body.

Specifically, I do not pretend to like the Eldridges, Beth Moore*, John Piper, t-shirts with Christian messages, or anything that has spent a lot of time in the fad stage. I like hymns at church and progressive rock or Celtic music when I do homework. I read all kinds of fiction (not Christian romance novels), watch Pg-13 or R-rated movies as long as they do not have too much sex or violence, and don't think that "secular" is necessarily bad nor that "religious" is necessarily good.

*A friend of mine was serving in Texas after Hurricane Katrina, and was one of many who spent two weeks of 18 hour days in a kitchen to feed people who were living in a stadium. Mrs. Moore arrived once a week in a skirt suit, heels, hose, hair all done up, and spoke to the women who were staying there (her usual "believers are under the mantle of God, women under the mantle of men" kind of message). Aside from not preferring her speaking/teaching style, I tend to appreciate someone who will get their hands dirty instead of just saying pretty words.

It's funny that you mention the whole jazz thing, because I am pretty much the only one of most of my friends who is not deeply in love with jazz. I like jazz fine, but I don't really know anything about it.

However, I'd have to say that I do love Lewis. The Great Divorce was excellent and in a Christian-sort-of-way very trippy, but I loved it, not to mention The Screwtape Letters and The Chronicles of Narnia.

Just reading the title of this page made me laugh out loud, because I'm pretty sure that for the most part, you're right about the majority of Christians "pretending to like C.S. Lewis."

wow so many things... actually my best friend has a list of things that get me really really upset, but here are the highlights:
patriotic music in church (ew. i'm like, "i want to sing about Jesus, not America...)
applause in church (like to commemorate a child's first communion or something similar)
dances that go along with worship songs (ie, trading my sorrows, Lord i lift your name on high, etc)

as for lewis (the topic originally) i must admit, i'm a huge fan. out of the comments i read, yes Great Divorce is awesome, but Perelandra is better. and GK Chesterton is where Lewis got all his ideas, and he's much funnier :)

Thanks for posting, Sarcasm? Yes please. I think we could be good friends.I wanted to bring up the Calvinist thing, but didn't know if we could be THAT honest. I have some good friends who are Calvinists.... just don't ask me to be one. I met John piper's wife once. She is not a dynamic speaker, but I enjoyed listening to her very much. She was saying the same thing God had been saying to me, so I listened very carefully.

I know this is going to be bad and that all the cool smart christians will hate me for this but I honestly do not like, Rob Bell, Or Donald Miller, Or John Piper, and yes it would be dumb of me to say that these men are not very smart or they are bad at speaking and writing, because they are and they have a gift from God, but most of the time when I ready their stuff or listen to them speak I just usually dont ever think its mind blowing or life changing stuff... I also of course dislike Joel Olsteen but I don't think thats much of a shocker. I also hate prayer circles and praying in front of people, I know thats bad. I also dislike most people who claim to be calvinists.

There are many things that I feel I should like as a Christian but I just can't get into them or I want more. I love to read and there are many talented Christian authors, but I feel like they won't press the issue or really address current issues even though they are contemporary stories. I want someone to deal with real issues. Deal with what I'm struggling with.

I dislike a lot of things that were already mentioned - The Shack, CCM, potlucks.

I hate being forced into acapella singing at group functions. Don't make me sing. Don't ask me to sing when instruments can't drown out my awful singing.

Oh yeah, and one more biggie:
Modern 'worship services' where choruses/songs are sung ad infinitum and everyone is swaying/bopping along - good for them but it irritates the ### out of me.

Thankfully, I'm rebel enuf not to pretend to like things. I do make a concession to people to not blurt my loathing out in public (most of the time). So here are the things I don't pretend to like:
Hillsong
Singing
Christian radio
Gone with the Wind
Princess Bride
Avatar
Right wing politics
Dogs
Other people's babies/kids (mine is fine)
God-is-your-sugar-daddy theology
Knick-knacks at christian bookstores
