Who are you listening to? A Short Saturday question.

May 30th by Jon

How fantastical are the podcast sermons from Matt Chandler, pastor of the Village Church in Highland Village, Texas?

A few weeks ago my little brother and I road tripped to Tallahassee (which I will forever refer to as “Sassy Tallahassee” having been informed of that rhyme by a delightful bumper sticker) and on the way there and back we listened to Matt Chandler sermons.

I’d like to pretend that kind of thing has happened before. That when my brothers and I go on road trips the three essentials are: Diet Rockstar energy drink, little Debbie cakes riding shotgun, and sermons on the stereo. But that would be a lie. I don’t think we’ve ever listened to a sermon on a road trip before.

That’s how fantastical Matt Chandler is.

But who you listening to? There are a million great pastors out there. Whether it’s your hometown pastor, online or on a podcast or in any other digital round the world wide interwebs kind of way, who do you recommend?

Who are you listening to these days?

Wow! I had no idea Matt Chandler’s podcasts were so popular. I attend the Village and also listen to the podcasts whenever possible. If you are ever in the Flower Mound, Texas, area, please come by and check us out! I’m going to have to check out some of these speaker’s y’all have mentioned though. Thanks for the great post!

I’ve been listening to different seminaries’ Chapel podcasts. You can find them on iTunesU. APU and Dallas Theological have great lectures and chapels available.

Also, Matt Brown at Sandals Church in Riverside is awesome. Actually, I think he’s the only great thing about Riverside.

And I also like the NPR: All Songs Considered podcast. Just throwin’ that out there.

Danielle May 30, 2009

I have been listening to John Mark Comer from The Way (a ministry out of Solid Rock Fellowship) in Beaverton (Portland), OR! It is some amazing stuff and he is one of my favorite guys to listen to. Here’s the link:
http://www.ajesuschurch.org/teachings.php?cat=2

Also Judah Smith from The City Church! http://thecity.org/

Enjoy!

I get to listen to Craig Groeschel weekly because he’s my pastor and boss but my fave from elsewhere is Francis Chan. I listened to him and talked about him so much my friends almost staged an intervention. Even Craig said teased me about him when he announced he was coming to speak at our church. (Don’t miss http://www.OnePrayer.com!)

But the last thing I heard him say stopped me dead in my tracks and I haven’t listened to a podcast since. He said we already know far more than we have actually applied. I need to quit fattening up and live everything out I already know to do.

ladykay May 30, 2009

oh my goodness! i can’t stop listening to matt chandler! best sermons on sex e-v-e-r.

Richard May 30, 2009

I went to The Village Church with my Dallas friends, while I lived there for two months. The guy is stellar, and very tall.

I’m listening to the old standby John Piper right now, since we are going through Romans in my small group and they spent years on the book in their church. It’s a cross between an audio commentary and sermon.

Teachertraveler May 30, 2009

Perry Noble’s One Prayer message from last year has been in my car for well…a year now! It’s awesome!

Also, I listen to Art Evans from San Diego Christian Worship Center, whose sermons I listened to for years before he became my current pastor. His “Jesus Christ, Prince of Life” series blew my socks off.

Kirsten May 30, 2009

Definitely Paul Washer @ Heart Cry Missionary…blows my mind every time.

Sam May 30, 2009

Love me some Matt Chandler and Mark Driscoll but I would trade a years worth of their podcasts for just 1 of Andy Stanley’s.

Andy is hands down the best communicator I have heard. Simple and applicable.

MLasch May 30, 2009

Mark Driscoll

Ian Lawton the Pastor of Christ Community Church (AKA “C3″) in Spring lake michigan has really amazing sermons (and a dreamy austrailian accent…) They’re available as podcast too :)

Anonymous May 30, 2009

Colleen, I agree, I can’t believe that there have been like, a gazillion men recommended and like what? 1 woman.
Maybe more male ministers have podcasts? I dunno though. I can think of a couple of amazing female ministers and preists I know. I doubt any of them have podcast though.
Maybe Barbara Rossing (Forgive me if miss spelled her name).
She is a bible scholar and Lutheran minister who’s written a great book (”The Rapture Exposed”)
I wonder if she has anything recorded?

Ian@UK May 31, 2009

Gotta agree with Jon, I love listening to The Village.

I find John Piper to be fairly mind stretching as well.

Also listen to Louie Giglio and Rob Bell’s teaching podcasts. Partly for the teaching, partly because I want to learn how to be a better preacher myself.

One of my favourite podcasts is wordlive, which is a daily scripture passage and meditation.

Britney May 31, 2009

I second Ben Stuart. The Restoration of Peter and Love Sends 1,2 & 3 podcasts are some of my favorites.

Anyone else feel like it's really easy to focus too much on speakers/podcasts and not enough on taking the time to delve into the word yourself?

Billy May 31, 2009

I podcast all of the usual ones, Piper, Johnny Mac, Washer, Sproul, also Wretched radio with Todd Friel. The one that has slapped me in head recently is Voddie Baucham. He just released a few more of his sermons and wow. If you have a chance SermonAudio.com him and listen to The Supremacy of Christ in a Postmodern World.

Wilmo May 31, 2009

I’m a John Piper person too. I just want to hear people that talk about Jesus. I just want to hear about him.

Sermon Index has a pretty vast selection of old and new people. I love Keith Green’s sermons. So much more to that man than music :)

DeLynn May 31, 2009

What a great entry in your blog! I am excited about having some new sermons to listen to!

My favorite by far: Andy StanleyNorthpoint.org/messages

He has an amazing ability to clearly communicate God’s truth. Very practical, thought provoking, convicting teaching.

Someone mentioned a sermon series on sex. I think Andy’s sermon called “A Category of One” is one that should be listened to by all unmarried teenagers/young adults.

Another person mentioned not listening a lot due to not having a long commute. I don’t have a commute :) but I listen while I cook, work around the house, iron, work outside, etc.

Thanks again for this great blog!

Judah Smith
http://www.thecity.org

Younger preacher who has changed my life listening to his messages over the years.

Joey Caldwell May 31, 2009

Perry Noble and Brian Houston

Hucklebuck May 31, 2009

As I’ve mentioned before, I love Wretched Radio with Todd Friel. I also started listening to Dr. Wayne Grudem’s “Christian Essentials” which is basically his entire systematic theology course in mp3 format for free along with downloadable study guides.

Megan May 31, 2009

Clayton King is ah-mazing!

Annie May 31, 2009

Nate Edwardson of The Stirring, in Redding, California. We don’t go there anymore, but I listen to the podcasts all the time. He’s a third generation pastor, and I think each generation has improved. We now attend Neighborhood Church in Redding, and if I miss a Sunday, I’m sure to download the podcast to hear Bill Giovannetti.

Becky May 31, 2009

so crazy to have a reality check of just how much God is using Matt all over the country. love.it! I went to college with Matt and have always loved hearing him preach.

However, I think my Pastor is absolutely killer! His preaching will seriously change your life.

Man, I’d love to listen to podcasts but never get to. Might be that I don’t have a player, might be that I never travel, might be that when I *do* travel I take the entire Ohio State Marching Band with me. Well, not the official band, of course, just three of its members impersonating the band. Otherwise known as “my kids.”

But when I *do* have some time to listen, I like NPR and TED talks. Not exactly churchianity, but interesting nonetheless.

bobfromchicago May 31, 2009

I’m addicted to Bill Giovannetti at Neighborhood Church, Redding CA. A great teacher and speaker. The current series is “Can You Feel It?”, the Bible’s wisdom about human emotion, but the site has several series, including “How to Recession-Proof Your Inner World.

Very deep, and theological, AND interesting, funny, and moving. Our small group in Chicago uses his sermons for our Bible Studies.

Joyce Meyer!

mary May 31, 2009

theres this hilarious podcast of shane claiborne speaking at an event where he analogizes demons trembling at the name of jesus to the part in the lion king where the heyenas are talking about mufasa and the whoopi goldberg one is like, oh, say it again! and then the other heyena says, MUFASA MUFASA MUFASA! and she goes crazy. yeah. that’s how the name of jesus should be.

anyway, i listen to that part over and over again and giggle uncontrollably, because it’s so funny and so true.

That church is down the street from me! I had a co-worker who used to attend there til he moved.

I listen to Pastor Joel Scrivner (one of my pastors) on iTunes. And if I am out of town, I watch services online at covenantchurch.org

I LOVE Tony Evans of Oak Cliff Fellowship. He is compelling and energetic and doesn’t shrink away from the truth. He’s awesome!

Reggie Jun 1, 2009

Pastor Paul Sheppard from Abundant Life Christian Fellowship in Mountain View, CA. He has a podcast. Look up Enduring Truth. Pastor Paul has a gift of using humor as a bridge to your heart, and once he’s in, he jacks you up and convicts you.

Suzanne Jun 1, 2009

I listen to Mark Driscoll, John Piper, Paul Tripp and I am blessed enough to live in DFW and go to Matt Chandler’s church…Even though, I do podcast our church sermons a lot!

howitallbegan Jun 1, 2009

Tim Keller rocks, but he only has about 10 podcasts you can download on iTunes for free. I can listen to them over and over though.
I love Ravi Zacharias.
And I also listen to Alistair Begg.

Allison Leigh Jun 1, 2009

I listen to both John Piper’s “Desiring God” sermon podcast, and Mark Driscoll’s Mars Hill Church Vodcasts when I can’t make it to Mars Hill for Sunday Services.

All very high quality speaking. Convicting and wonderful.

Scott Jun 1, 2009

I fourth Ben Stuart. His recent 4-part series on sex and dating is exceptionally refreshing.

Dan Bouchelle, Central Church of Christ in Amarillo Texas. He's really good and if you are thinking ugghhh CofC then listen. Our denomination earned some of the criticism thrown our way but our church at least is trying to change that and let people know we just really love the God and we don't think we are the only ones that do :)

Sixth Ben Stuart. I attended the college ministry he led (Breakaway) while at Texas A&M.

Now I attend The Village and get to hear Matt Chandler every week!

I also podcast Mark Driscoll regularly – he is somewhat of a mentor to Chandler.
