Have you ever considered just communicating with your mom? Mom...you're the greatest and I love that you are so interested in my day. I also really appreciate that you still do all these things to take care of me. I like to have some quiet time when I get home from work, so will you understand if I shut myself in my room for a bit before I come out to chat with you?

Seriously.

1. Moms love that encouragement and rarely get it. 2. If she works that hard to take care of you, she'll appreciate the communication. 3. If you get mad at her for interrupting your quiet time to offer to serve you when you've never even told her about it, then you're being ridiculously unfair.

I think TBN sells these in various designer colors. Someone even thought to put a flashing light on the "CSR" machine that we can pretend not to notice. Unfortunately, the sea bass "lasers" are only those red light versions used for marking targets and don't really inflict any damage. That is why I NEVER brush my teeth before quiet time...

jon, your post made me think of a friend. she always got up early for her quiet time, and never realized what her kids thought. until one day while in a rebellious mood, one of her 3 says, "don't preach to me. i've never seen you pray or read your bible except for church or meals." she didn't know they thought "my parents don't have quiet time." so congrats to those who read to their kids when interrupted.
i think we have "seasons" :) of devotions. i need the start to my day, but when i had young ones we had family devotions, and once or 2x a week, couples prayer. i know, sounds sketchy, but getting into bed and drifting off, praying about kids, marriage, made us stronger.
we need quiet time with God and His word, but it can be different for us, as we are different when we come to Him. sorry for the sermon, just something i've learned.

Hmm. I sort of think the difference between trick-or-treat and trunk-or-treat is obvious. For one, you get your treats from a car trunk. Ideally, the candy is from someone at your church, so not only is it safe, you can talk to the people for a little while. It's way more acceptable for an adult to dress up and attend trunk-or-treat and yes, take part in the treats. And usually, there are other great things going on from chili dogs to a worship band. If you get lucky, you can bob for apples, though it's way too cold here this year.

My self-righteousness is opposite. I have a chronic illness that doesn't allow any kind of schedule in my life, so I try to make my quiet time or time with friends or whatever work when I can. I take enough pride in asking God to allow this time that I really look down on people who schedule time out, or more specifically, people who are proud of that time and tell me I should do the same.

I like to have my quiet time before I go to bed at night. Usually I interrupt myself by falling asleep in the middle of 'talking' to God - I realize this when I jerk awake a half hour later and realize my Bible is reading me and my lights are still on. Or when my mind wanders to that problem I absolutely must tell God about and find myself examining possible solutions to it as I talk to him about it... I need Jesus.
