What should we do on Stuff Christians Like in 2010?

Dec 26th by Jon

For some reason, Gavin DeGraw is not nearly as famous as I feel like he should be. I have a bunch of his music and every time I hear his song “In Love with a Girl” on the radio I turn it up. I dig him but he’s never really had that breakout hit like Jason Mraz and “I’m Yours.” (By the way, Jack Johnson is the reason Jason Mraz leaned that direction which is the reason Train recently leaned that direction with their song “Hey Soul Sister.” It’s all related.)

I was reminded of my love for Gavin DeGraw recently when I got the album “Love & the lack thereof” by a guy named Greg Sczebel. On the first track, Sczebel sounds a lot like Gavin DeGraw in a good way. Heavy on piano and fun hooks, I ended up digging this whole album. I thought you would too, which is why I’m excited to give away 5 copies. (That’s my review policy by the way, if folks send me books or albums, I’ll always try to give out copies to you too. Although sometimes people want to send me Amish romance fiction and I just can’t roll that way even if secretly I hope Jereziah does end up in the arms of Ruth Watterson on the lonely plains of Wisconsin.)

I digress.

Let’s have a wicked simple comment contest today.

The question is “what should we do with Stuff Christians Like in 2010?”

What should we add? What should we do less of? What topics are missing? What technologies are horribly absent?

Answer any way you’d like. (More posts about being single at church! Less giveaways! More Serious Wednesday type posts! Etc.)

Or if you’d like to see us just keep doing what we’ve been doing, feel free to say that too.

Comment until Tuesday, December 29th and then I’ll pick 5 CD winners.

Thanks!

love it as is.
perfect blend of silly and sublime.

SuperJon Dec 28, 2009

I would spend way too much time on an SCL forum.

I say we do it.

Dan Byl Dec 28, 2009

What should you do in the new year? I think you should add some polls to your site with tantalizing questions about who is better, who is the most metro sexual worship leaders, and give prizes to the winners. Also I think you should try and find some aspiring authors and put a place on your site where they can publish a chapter of there book every month, it would be a great way to help up an comers reach there dreams, you would be like Dr Dre the greatest hip hop producer of all time. But just with authors and people who probably can't rap.

Also defiantly continue to sponsor different projects for the needy, after all that’s one of Christ’ specific requests of us as Christians.

Thanks for inspiring us to be better people, and real about our lives

Ps It’s true I am probably only commenting because I want a copy of that album by Greg Sczebel, and truly it is only because when you but a S a C and an Z together you know you have a winner.

Greg Dec 28, 2009

What about a forum type thing?

joanna Dec 28, 2009

I think SCL is pretty awesome already, although i do think it is time for some more guest posts by Stacey from Louisville

StacyFromLouisville Dec 29, 2009

THanks Joanna! The encouragement means a lot, even if half the SCL community just rolled their eyes.

Jeff Dec 28, 2009

SCL is great, but I feel like a dragon wielding a lightsaber (or a dragon made out of lightsabers) would be a really nice addition.

RawFaith Dec 28, 2009

Love serious Wednesdays. Love the goofy stuff too. I would love to see what would happen if once a month or a quarter we could do other projects like… building wells, providing food for starving kids… helping poor kids here at home… insert great project here_______. It would be great to do updates on the kindergartens too.

Luvs2Dance Dec 28, 2009

When I was originally introduced to SCL I laughed like crazy over the posts and the comments. I like the wry sarcasm that you use to talk about Christian beliefs and customs – I think it's hilarious, and that's why I keep coming back. Serious Wednesdays threw me off at first because I expected something funny each day, but I have to admit they packed a punch and made an impression.

In short, I like SCL just the way it is right now, although I would not be opposed to some of the ideas proposed by other users here, especially the forum idea.

Side hug and razzle dazzle.

One thing Christians love: A good, Ten-Commandment heeding Christian company. Take for example the "Christian" fast food chain, Chik-Fil-A. What Christian hasn't geeked out and simultaneously brimmed with anger that they aren't open on Sundays? And, oh, did you hear that they use subliminal Bible messaging in their advertising to get people to "Eat Mor Chikin"? Not really, but we would love it if they did.

SCL IPHONE APP!!!!!

Ali Dec 28, 2009

Idea! (And apologies if I haven't dug far enough into the archives to see that you've already done this) College Ministries can be hilarious!

tiffhadley Dec 28, 2009

You are really good at the "serious" stuff – maybe more of that…but all is well!

chelle Dec 28, 2009

i'm loving the app suggestions. i also wouldn't mind seeing more "celebrity" posts. i dig outside SCL views from bloggers like yourself…and if you can get a real celebrity, like Donald Miller, to visit, that'd be pretty awesome, too. just sayin'.

thanks for all you do, brother.

Saskia Dec 28, 2009

scl app!

Elissa Dec 28, 2009

Continue being the greatest thing to come out of Christianity since Sandi Patty.

jack Dec 28, 2009

why not write about SCUTL (stuff Christians used to like) and now don't like. I'm sure we could do some time traveling and find some stuff.

or what about SCL BS (stuff Christians like but shouldn't…)

oh wait..just realized what that initial did…okay…i could delete it rather than write about it, but …meh

ConnieB Dec 28, 2009

I love the blog already. But if you're looking for topics here are my suggestions: church secretaries (the longsuffering vs. the commandos), people who say "blessings" instead of "sincerely" at the end of their letters (because it makes them sound more spiritual???), how people who would never darken the door of a church expect the church to bail them out of their financial troubles.

annieschrader Dec 28, 2009

I would love to see some posts on the church of tomorrow! I love hearing what others think about church in the community and what this looks like, so I would be interested in that for sure!

Robyn Jones Dec 28, 2009

i love scl! some of my favorites actually do include being single at church and the serious wednesday posts. so, keep it up with those. i also really love what we did as a group to build those kindergartens. so, let's do more of sharing Jesus' love in amazing ways like that.

Mandi Dec 28, 2009

more posts about singledom, cartoon drawings my Wes M., and the forum thingy sounds cool :)

Charlanne Dec 28, 2009

Loving the serious Wednesday posts and giveaways! Keep 'em coming!
Also, anything having to do with Christian pop culture…so much fuel there…
I appreciate your ability to be sarcastic and yet not bitter…thanks for balance.

Renda Dec 28, 2009

I totaly dig the lists… like the "Top 10, 15, 20 "
Keep those coming. Those are fun and fast to read. Not that I check my blog while I am at work or anything.

Blessings,

thegypsymama Dec 28, 2009

More interpretative dance videos. Those manage to combine beauty and wisdom and laughter all in one place.

StacyFromLouisville Dec 29, 2009

MOre pics of you in an inflatable bubble. Please.

Miss_Ashley Dec 29, 2009

I agree with Renda on the lists thing. Also, although I don't comment often (because I always feel the need to read through all the comments first, and most of the time I don't have the time for that), I think the posts where you invite us to participate (like "give this picture a caption" posts) are hilarious.
But I also <3 SCL like it is, too.

Starr Dec 29, 2009

I always appreciate your 'shout outs' to us single folks! Oh, and new cd's are uba fun!!

Meghan Marie Dec 29, 2009

More skittles…yes. Definetly more skittles.

Shawna Dec 29, 2009

This is a great site – lots of interesting bites of interesting topics. Being singe (or divorced – gasp!) in the church is really tough and so it would be interesting to cover more of that – or to handle divorce within the church context (but, of course, it may NOT be something that Christians like so…) But otherwise – cool site – thanks!

Jenni Dec 29, 2009

Just came on to the site. I know a lot of people who are single at church and at the moment would not have it any other way. I also am single at church but for different reasons…. my 2 kids (teen and pre-teen) are both Christian but my husband refuses to come with us. I keep praying that he will eventually see the light through me or one of the kids. It has not happened yet, but I have faith that one day it will.

Jana Dec 29, 2009

I would love to see a post/series of posts about the Evangelical cultural love for being "safe" or "harmless" with our culture.

Elisa Dec 29, 2009

I think more posts about the "hidden underbelly" of the church. I haven't seen one yet on the hospitality volunteers… trust me, there are no bootleg cookies without them.

SusieD Dec 29, 2009

I like the idea of Stuff Christians don't like… could be interesting. The comment of the Amish romance novels is hilarious. Recently a group of us found a box of Christian romance novels that were being given away at our church and we were practically rolling around on the floor after reading some of the backs (my apologies to those who are into Christian romance) and one guy took one home for his wife. He said he was going to read it to her (I think he really just wanted to know what was going to happen). I also wanted to say that whoever wins the Greg Sczebel albums will be really lucky!! I have one myself and love his stuff, he's got some super fun tunes and a great voice.

coldbeer4thesoul Dec 29, 2009

You can use the rule I use to forecast at work:

More of the same, only different.

Deb R Dec 30, 2009

New reader here thanks to Greg S. and btw I would luv luv luv to win his CD!
I have just immersed myself in this site for more than 2 hours and can't get enuf!
Jon, you have some great work here and a great following!
It's funny, thought provoking and affirms my faith.
I suppose if you haven't covered it already, you could have more of the 'I'm in the world but not of the world' . Many of us are surrounded daily by non-believers, family included. Our church life (Sabaths, weekday bible studies, group events, etc) seem like a brief respite in our everyday lives. How do people cope? There is so much you can write about on that.
Hmmm… keep it up, friend!

Amber C. Dec 30, 2009

A picture gallery of awesome side hugs.

gabriellaheidi Dec 31, 2009

I LOVE SCL.

I would love to see more posts about the funny things your daughters say! :)

Also… I was wondering about the whole word comment that some people leave on their comments. It seems like they are making up definitions for fake words? I want to know more :)

Also, I know you are probably working on it, but it would be neat to click on words that you have tagged posts as and see all the posts about youth groups, prayer, culture…

Thanks for doing amazing work Jon!

while this is too late for the competition I realise…
I thought of a potential topic for '10 and wanted to share it anyway..

something along the lines of… 'Listening to U2 (and possibly ColdPlay) and then telling people how you're really into secular music'…. when quized about 'other' secular bands you're into, pausing for a while before answering… Switchfoot.

You know it's true.
