Haiti.

Jan 14th by Jon

There are 4 people in my family.

There are 12 people on my team at work.

There are about 30 people in my cul-de-sac at home.

There are 2,000 people at my company.

There are 25,000 people at my church.

There were 30,000 people in the town I grew up in.

And if you added them all up, they’d still fall well short of the number of people who died in the earthquake in Haiti .

It’s impossible to figure out the total number of lives lost, but some estimates put it at 50,000 – 100,000. And there might be more than a million people homeless or injured.

So today and tomorrow, instead of a normal post on Stuff Christians Like I thought I’d just link to Samaritan’s Purse. If you want to donate to support the relief efforts in Haiti , click here.

And if you want to say a prayer for Haiti or link to a different charity raising funds, feel free to do that in the comments.

We need all the prayers and money you can send. Most towns are cut off from everyone else. Most phones are down. Many people scared and worried.

100 years ago it would have taken us weeks to find out about this info.
50 years ago, it would have taken a few days
20 years ago, it would have taken until the evening newscast or next morning newspaper.
Today, we heard within minutes or hours.

We do have a responsiblity to react with speed since we have been given 'technology."

"To whom much is given, much is required", right?
I blogged about this over at http://www.redletterbelievers.com and have a list of 15 reputable relief agencies.

My school Lincoln Christian University has many missionaries living directly in PaP, we've received word that most of them are safe but are still waiting to hear from a few. I'm sure this is the case for many families stateside and so prayer is definitely needed for them as well as the more than a million people who live in PaP.

"But pain insists upon being attended to. God whispers to us in our pleasures, speaks in our conscience, but shouts in our pains: it is His megaphone to rouse a deaf world." –C.S. Lewis

Throughout this devestation this is the church's opportunity to make God's glory known. It's pleasing to know hundreds of gospel based organizations are mobilizing to demonstrate what mercy looks like.

So I will offer up only one more prospective charity: The http://www.Send-Jon Acuff-To-Haiti-With-The-Gospel- and-Side-Hugs-Armed-With-An-Endless-Supply-Of-Bibles-And-Skittles-And-Wicker-Furniture-That-Can-Be-Broken-Down-To-Build-Shelters.org Foundation.

I have a wonderful excerpt from a book written by a friend who has been traveling to Haiti for years who also adopted a young Haitian girl. Millions of orphans BEFORE the earthquake- can't even fathom the numbers now. She gave me links to the adoption agency she went through as well as a couple of other agencies that she works with and knows first-hand they are good stewards of the money people are donating.

God bless all those who are helping in whatever way they can.

I hope I'm not opening a can of worms when I say this, but…

I heard what Pat Robertson had to say about this, and I am physically sick because of it. I heard what Rush Limbaugh had to say about this, and I am physically sick because of it.

And right now, only the love of God through His people can redeem my faith in Christians and Christianity. Please, everyone on this page, I implore you to do what you can to show God's Love, not sit on your laurels and blame the victims.

How can anyone's heart be so hard that they'd honestly be able to stare a suffering nation in the face and say "I won't lift a finger to help you, you brought this on yourself you heathens" without batting an eyelash?

Ugh… I made myself ill again. Sorry.

This is a great post. The number breakdown really stuck out to me. I think we need to do whatever possible to help these people out. Check out this website if you haven't found a place to donate yet. http://www.fh.org

Holt International is an agency there in Haiti that takes care of orphaned children. They will be over flowing with more orphans than they ever feared possible after this earthquake. They need funds as they provide housing, food, water, and now trauma counselling to these orphans. You can read about their firsthand experience here as well as donate. http://holtinternational.org/blog/?p=951

just offering up another way to give!

God bless them!

In 2009 I had the blessing of going to Haiti twice with One Vision International. This ministry cares for a group of 120+ children, most of them left orphaned and homeless as a result of the 3 hurricanes and 1 tropical storm that struck Haiti in the fall of 2008. On Tuesday, the earthquake destroyed the structure that they currently call home, but all of the children are miraculously alive and very few injured. They are now living under two tarps on the property, well away from any of the damaged structures that could still crumble. One Vision has several relief trips planned for the coming weeks, but they obviously need financial resources to provide for the children's ongoing needs and need for new shelter. To learn more and to make a donation, you can visit their Web site at http://www.onevisionintl.org. Thank you!

I live in the Dominican Republic in a small city that is only two hours away, and it is so crazy how something like this can prove to you just how little control you have on life. teams have been coming in from all over the world, what they need right now is Jesus. Haiti is a dark place that Jesus can change.

If you're a blogger (or a commenter) you should check out: http://www.moneysavingmom.com/money_saving_mom/20...

Linking up to that and multitudes of other blogs will multiply the donations that people are already making to help those suffering in Haiti (i.e. $1/link $.50/comment).

I've posted similarly on my own blog: http://skooksplayground.blogspot.com/2010/01/what...

Please stop by and link up your post about what you're doing to help those in Haiti.

Why is there a backlash against people helping the Haitians now?!! grrrr….
All these people in the U.S.who are complainin' that we need to help "our own" before other countries, and I doubt they spend even an hour volunteering or donate more than a couple bucks to a shelter or other relief organizations FOR U.S. citizens.

For a number of years I have sponsored children through His Hands for Haiti. This is a Christian organization coordinated through local pastors. They are in the Cap-Haitien area (northern Haiti). For $80.00 ($40.00 twice a year) you can send a child to school, provide them with a uniform, and give them a hot meal. Sometimes this is their only meal that day. http://www.hishandsforhaiti.org/default.asp
