2 Years of Stuff Christians Like

Mar 20th by Jon

Tomorrow marks two straight years of Stuff Christians Like. It started because I always thought it was weird the way we put a God spin on popular secular ideas. Got Milk becomes Got God, Adidas becomes Add Jesus etc. I thought it would be fun to talk about that situation by committing that situation by copying the concept between Christian Lander’s site, Stuff White People Like.

I had 50 other websites registered and thought this would be one more dumb idea I wrote about for 2 weeks and got bored with. But for reasons beyond the singularity of my unibrow, the site grew and it’s two years later. I asked God about a year ago if it would be crazy to try to tell a million people about him. It seemed kind of far fetched and silly. But having reached 1.1 million readers these last two years I am coming to grips with the idea that I tend to undersize the guy who breathed the Grand Canyon. I digress.

To celebrate the two years I thought it would be fun to do two things:

1. Give you the coolest thing I’ve seen all year.

2. Create a list of my 7 favorite Stuff Christians Like posts.

What’s that thing? The BookBook.

bookbook2

It’s a classic book turned into a macbook case. It’s cool, I’ve never seen one in real life and I’d love to give you one. If you don’t have a macbook or macbook pro and you win, you can have an iPod shuffle instead. Your choice.

Simply leave a comment, any comment at all on this post by the end of Sunday night, March 21 and you’ll be entered.

And the list?

These are my 7 favorite Stuff Christians Like posts and the reasons why. If you haven’t read them yet, take a look:

1. #106. The side hug

This one became the cover of the book, was written about in a Chicago Tribune article and earned me more hate than the staff of the Fresh Prince of Bel Air must have felt for the original lady that played the mom.

2. #62. Being slightly less nice than Mormons.

I included this one in the list because this is one of the first posts where I realized the site could be a ministry. Part of the reason I believed that is a comment someone left. Here’s an excerpt of what they said: No offense to anyone reading this, but if I weren’t an atheist, I’d strive to be this kind of Christian.

3. #512. Thinking you’re naked.

This one is about grace and as a guy who has a hard time getting his hands around that, this is one I appreciate.

4. #269. Metrosexual Worship Leaders

This one was fun to write and the drawing that Wes Molebash did pushed it over the edge. Then Chris Tomlin autographed an unnecessary scarf. Long live metrosexual worship leaders.

5. #159. The “pray you if you feel led” prayer.

This was one of the first posts about prayer and it showed me how enjoyable it could be to write about this subject.

6. #550. Surviving church as a single.

As a married guy, sometimes I feel like I write too many posts about marriage. This was my shout out to all my single friends.

7. What if?

This is the post that started the Vietnam kindergarten project. No matter what else happens with the blog, we raised $60,000 to build two kindergartens halfway around the world. Easy pick for this list.

Congratulations, Jon. I don't think I was here on Day 1, but I've been here for quite a while. I often share posts with others. Have yourself a great day.

savinggrc Mar 20, 2010

I’m still jealous that I didn’t win the scarf, but that’s a different post. Congratulations, Jon. Book should be here late next week!

Dana Mar 20, 2010

That's basically INCREDIBLE. Thanks for being awesome, Jon!

erin Mar 20, 2010

Happy 2 years!

And did the staff of Fresh Prince really hate the first mom? Is that why she left? I totally liked her better. I bet there's a True Hollywood Story on the show, and I just haven't seen it.

Kristi Mar 20, 2010

I love love love your blog. Check it every day! :-)

Jason Stonehouse Mar 20, 2010

Here is my comment – I think you are one of the funniest people on Twitter and I skim through lots of tweets just to read yours – don't mean to puff you up — but I'm glad you do what you do.
Plus that macbook pro cover thing looks really cool and I'd love to win it – I've responded to a few of your contests but have yet to win…. I'd like to though…

Jillene Mar 20, 2010

I can't wait until your book arrives in my mailbox! Praising God for all he is doing through you!

@j_little Mar 20, 2010

Since the macbook pro is the device by which I gain new understanding of stuff Christians like everyday, I think it's only fitting that it be housed in a BookBook from you, Jon. Can't wait to get it! Thanks. And keep calling me out on stuff I like.

SCM Mar 20, 2010

Oh goodness, those look so cool!

Andrew Larsen Mar 20, 2010

jon, i love reading almost as much as i would love a bookbook, and of course i have a mac, i'm a christian.

Ben Estes Mar 20, 2010

That's pretty neat. And I still think Booty God Booty was the best post ever. I remember thinking the day you posted it, "I'll be reading this blog for awhile."

Robert Johnson Mar 20, 2010

2 years – AWESOME!

Garrett Mar 20, 2010

I’m a big fan of the metro-sexual worship leader

Sean Mar 20, 2010

Great Stroll down memory lane Jon. I am proud to say I started reading your stuff when you were somewhere in the 50's on the number of posts. I easily went back and read all the previous entries…that would not be as easy today with the number of post you have had! Keep up the good work.

Jonathan Vick Mar 20, 2010

Jon, your site is a part of my routine at work now, thanks!

Blessings

fluffman86 Mar 20, 2010

Good to read by through some classic posts. Those are some of my favorites as well, but I also love the one about how people raise their hands in church, and the prayer sneak attack. :D

melblank Mar 20, 2010

One of my favorites: #585. Thinking God will run out of welcome home banners.

@helga83 Mar 20, 2010

2 Years… Congrats! Love reading your stuff! Can't wait for the book.

@georgeTHEarab Mar 20, 2010

Congrats man! You make me realize with talent, personality, and dedication…you can really do anything.

Brandon Mar 20, 2010

This book may help me smuggle my church's macbook Pro home more often.

Tara Jean Mar 20, 2010

My Fav post so far. #726-bad Christian jokes. Who knew there could be over 5+pages? SO funny. The best one? " What did the cannibal do after he ate the Pentecostal? Threw up his arms." My husband and I were laughing so hard! Thanks for a great laugh!

Joey Mar 20, 2010

Great giveaway! Congrats on 2 years…

Dianne Mar 20, 2010

Yep, it was about two years ago I found this site and I laughed till tears ran down onto my poor little ibook. (may it R.I.P.)

Was that really two years ago? Oh my.

Janet Mar 20, 2010

@Celloist Mar 20, 2010

Aaron J Mar 20, 2010

I've been reading for a little over a year I think, and I can honestly say it's the blog I MOST look forward to reading. Your Wednesday posts are awesome! Thanks for listening to God, and using your unibrow for good things, not evil.

Jess Mar 20, 2010

I so much want to say " I NEEEED this MacBook case!!!", When in fact i just reeeeeeaaaalllyyy WANT it!!!!! (:

Sojung Mar 20, 2010

i still remember reading your "thinking your naked" post and getting chills. love what you're doing here and what God is doing with this blog! God bless!

Elizabeth Bryant Mar 20, 2010

Yay for two years–that's awesome! I really love this site because it combines my all time favorite things: Jesus and satire….and kindergardeners. God bless and keep up the great work!

Amber Bullman Medel Mar 20, 2010

I'd like to say that I've read every post since you started two years ago, but that would be a lie. And lying + Christian = not good. :) Oh, and I have a Macbook Pro and would love to have a BookBook….also quite possibly the coolest thing I've seen all year.

Ryan Rose Mar 20, 2010

Your posts keep me laughing and thinking- two key elements missing from a lot of ministries. Thanks and keep up the good work.
