To be honest, my dad the honorable Reverand Acuff had to explain to me what “emergent” meant in regards to the church and Christianity. Although I grew up in the church, I have really only been pursuing a relationship with Christ for about 3 years. So I tend to stick to the basics. Am I loving God? Am I loving other people? Am I loving myself? (You ever notice that about God’s second most important commandment? You have to love yourself, it’s not an option.) I get a little lost with being missonal or emergent or emerging. So I looked it up on Wikipedia and here is what I was told:
The movement embraces “postmodernism’s postfoundational epistemology and pluralistic approach to religion and spirituality.”
Wow, I understood three words in that sentence. But we love it. Some folks like Brian McLaren and emergent theology and lots of my friends that I respect like to debate it. Even though I have a hard time pronouncing “epistemology,” and recently wrote about how silly “postmodern” is as a catch phrase, this site is about Stuff Christians Like so “emerging” certainly qualifies.
