Update – Friday, November 14
Contest is closed for comments. Results will be announced on Saturday. Matthew Paul Turner is giving 10 free books away to Stuff Christians Like readers instead of the 5 we planned. That guy is great.
Last Monday we had a rousing debate about the things we pretended to like in order to appear like “good Christians.” A friend suggested that we should twist the post. Now that we’ve talked about things we pretend to like, let’s confess the things we pretend to hate, but secretly enjoy.
And I’m not talking about things like, “I pretend to hate malt liquor but I secretly enjoy it because my Christian friends would kill me if they knew how much I loved Old E.”
I’m talking about the cheesy Christian things, many of which have been listed on this site, that we secretly like. Since it’s been a comment heavy week and folks might want to be quiet today I thought I would add an extra incentive to speak up. The 5 best comments will win a free copy of Matthew Paul Turner‘s great new book, Churched. Matthew will judge which comments he thinks are best and we’ll announce the winners on Saturday, 15th on stuffchristianslike.net.
I’ll go first:
Christian things I pretend to not like because I don’t want to get made fun of:
1. Christian radio
It can be extremely cheesy and silly and unicorny happy, but sometimes if I’m feeling blue and no one is in the car, I’ll turn it on and listen to the hosts talk for a few minutes. It feels like I’m secretly doing a hit of sunshine, but there it is.
2. Metrosexual Worship Leader Hair.
As much as I make fun of worship leaders with product in their hair, I kind of have that hair right now. It looks like a cross between a shark fin and the cartoon character Tin Tin. And when I see worship leaders with crazy hair, I secretly think, “I wish I was cool enough to pull that off.”
3. Finding spiritual meaning in the movie the Matrix
Huge cliché here, but I do it. Just yesterday I was thinking, “Wow, that last scene where Neo stops the bullets is really a good representation of what happens when God removes the power of other people’s words in your life. Wait, what just happened, am I finding spirituality in the Matrix?”
Bonus Confession – Yanni
I’ve confessed this one before and it has nothing to do with God, but sometimes I write while listening to Yanni’s album, “Live at the Acropolis.” I love it. I think it’s beautiful and inspiring and someday, if I ever do a live reading of Stuff Christians Like at the Acropolis, I’ll probably grow a Yanni like mustache.
That feels a lot better. I’m not cool. I’m a huge dork.
Let it all out. What do you pretend to be above or too cool for but are secretly digging when no one is looking?
