My church tags our kids like whales when we drop them off at Sunday School
They might not use radio frequency ear tags, but when you give them your kid, they give you a laminated number and immediately attach that same number to the back of their shirt. Then, you sit in church and hope your number doesn’t come up, thus signifying you are the winner of the “horrible kid lottery.”
Yesterday though I looked at my number and got pretty excited. Why?
My daughter L.E.’s number was 7177.
Christians might not play the lottery much.
We don’t cotton to astrology.
We don’t believe in fortune cookie messages.
But the number 777? That is the most powerful number in the world.
Equipped with more goodness and mystery than the number Desmond had to type in the show Lost, 777 is without a doubt the official number of Christianity. (I heard Buddhists love the number 43. Not sure why.)
What was I really expecting though when my daughter was tagged with a card that contained the numerical elixir that is 777? Like maybe I would get her back after Sunday School and her pockets would be filled with cash? Or that when I returned to get her the lady at the door would say, “And here’s a free iPad?” (If you know a way to convince my wife I need one, I am all ears. All ears.)
It’s just a number, even if it is mentioned in the book of Joel or maybe Hezekiah or one of those books you think is a book of the Bible but is actually just the name of a guy with a really long beard from the Old Testament.
I’ve never personally been blessed or awesomified by the number 777. The number 37? That is my jam. Whenever I need a random number for a sentence I use it, e.g. there are 37 reasons Miley Cyrus should try to be the next Shania Twain instead of trying to be a deep fried version of Lady Gaga. It’s got 3 in it, which is the same number as the father, son and holy ghost. It’s also got 7 in it, so you’re covered there. And there’s no 6, which we all know is the jersey number on the back of satan. It’s really a very complete number.
But maybe I’m wrong about this, have you ever secretly thought about the awesomeness of the number 777?
